BACKGROUND: Why you need omegas

If there was ever an action movie about fats, the omega fatty acids would play the good guys. Obviously. Saturated fats would play the bad guys. And trans fats too. But, if it ever came down to a turf war, the omega gang – led by the omega 3s – would kick bad-fat butt. Why? Because they can.
 

OMEGA 3
What? The long-chain omega 3s, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) are considered the most important fatty acids in the omega 3 family. The Godfathers, if you will. They’re called “essential” fatty acids because, although your body needs them for healthy cellular functioning, it can't produce them in-house. So they have to be ordered in, either from the food you eat or from supplements.

Why? Getting the right amount of EPA and DHA can boost health on many levels – particularly when it comes to...

  • Heart health
  • Brain health
  • ADHD, particularly in kids

Where? To get the right amount of omega 3 you have to choose the right food and the right supplements – namely omega-3 dense foods like olive oil and oily fish, and mega-concentrated supplements like The Real Thing Mega Omega.

 

OMEGA 6
What? These omega 3 sidekicks – such as gamma-linoleic acid and linoleic acid – are also “essential” fatty acids that the body needs but can’t manufacture.

Where? It’s found in olive oil, avocados, nuts and borage oil.

 


FACT: The Mediterranean Diet might be Greek to you, but it makes omega 3 sense. It's all about fresh produce, whole grains, less animal fat and more omega-3 rich olive oils and oily fish. Studies show that Mediterranean eaters (and Inuit Eskimos) have higher “good” HDL cholesterol levels due to their omega 3 intake. Good news for them, and for us.


 

WHAT MAKES OUR FISH OIL “MEGA OMEGA”?

What’s inside is more important than size. For fish oil supplements, that is. While most modern, urban diets (and supplements) leave you hungry for omega 3s, The Real Thing Mega Omega supplements contain up to five times more omega 3s than the average fish oil.

Other research has shown that omega-3 fatty acids can help with weight-loss and circulatory problems like varicose veins. They can also bring cardiovascular protection to diabetics, who often have low HDL levels, and high triglycerides.

According to a 2002 statement by the American Heart Association, taking 500mg to 1 800mg of EPA and DHA per day, "significantly reduces subsequent cardiac and all-cause mortality". A complicated way of saying it keeps you healthier for longer. Which is great.

In a five-year study published in The Lancet in 2007, over 18 000 patients with high cholesterol were given either a statin drug alone, or a statin with 1 800mg of EPA daily. The result? EPA-taking patients showed better heart function and fewer coronary events. A complicated way of saying it helps prevent heart disease and heart attack. Which is also great.
