BACKGROUND: Why you need omegas
If there was ever an action movie about fats, the omega fatty acids would play the good guys. Obviously. Saturated fats would play the bad guys. And trans fats too. But, if it ever came down to a turf war, the omega gang – led by the omega 3s – would kick bad-fat butt. Why? Because they can.
Why? Getting the right amount of EPA and DHA can boost health on many levels – particularly when it comes to...
Where? To get the right amount of omega 3 you have to choose the right food and the right supplements – namely omega-3 dense foods like olive oil and oily fish, and mega-concentrated supplements like The Real Thing Mega Omega.
Why? In the correct ratio, omega 6s work with omega 3s to help...
But the correct ratio is the key.
Where? Found mostly in vegetable oils and meat, they’re also present in plant-based oils, such as evening primrose oil, borage oil and black currant seed oil.
Why? It helps promote healthy immune function while reducing the risk of arteriosclerosis, heart disease and stroke. Once again, the right omega ratio is key.
Where? It’s found in olive oil, avocados, nuts and borage oil.
FACT: The Mediterranean Diet might be Greek to you, but it makes omega 3 sense. It's all about fresh produce, whole grains, less animal fat and more omega-3 rich olive oils and oily fish. Studies show that Mediterranean eaters (and Inuit Eskimos) have higher “good” HDL cholesterol levels due to their omega 3 intake. Good news for them, and for us.
WHAT MAKES OUR FISH OIL “MEGA OMEGA”?
What’s inside is more important than size. For fish oil supplements, that is. While most modern, urban diets (and supplements) leave you hungry for omega 3s, The Real Thing Mega Omega supplements contain up to five times more omega 3s than the average fish oil.
Why? Most fish oil supplements are actually low in the long-chain omega 3s, EPA and DHA. Even if the capsules are large. Seriously.
How? Take a closer look at the labels: although the stated capsule size (e.g. 1 000mg) tells you how much fish oil each cap contains, it says nothing about the actual concentration of omega 3s.
So what? So you'd need to take handfuls of these less concentrated capsules to get the scientifically supported dose of omega 3s – namely 1 000mg of EPA and DHA daily. Not so with The Real Thing Mega Omega supplements. Take a closer look at the labels. They really are mega-concentrated with omegas.
A BIT OF SCIENCE... WHAT MEGA OMEGA FISH OILS CAN DO FOR YOU
1. A HEALTHIER HEART
Other research has shown that omega-3 fatty acids can help with weight-loss and circulatory problems like varicose veins. They can also bring cardiovascular protection to diabetics, who often have low HDL levels, and high triglycerides.
According to a 2002 statement by the American Heart Association, taking 500mg to 1 800mg of EPA and DHA per day, "significantly reduces subsequent cardiac and all-cause mortality". A complicated way of saying it keeps you healthier for longer. Which is great.
In a five-year study published in The Lancet in 2007, over 18 000 patients with high cholesterol were given either a statin drug alone, or a statin with 1 800mg of EPA daily. The result? EPA-taking patients showed better heart function and fewer coronary events. A complicated way of saying it helps prevent heart disease and heart attack. Which is also great.
2. A BRAINIER BRAIN
A recent Harvard study investigated the effects of high-dose EPA supplementation in five- to 12-year-olds with ADHD. After three months the children on EPA showed improvements in motor skills, literacy skills, and teacher-rated behavioral and learning difficulties. Sounds impressive. Because it is.
